Scott Freeman, Ph.D., LMHC

Scott Freeman
I’d like to share some information and background about myself and philosophy about my approach to counseling. I am an experienced Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a demonstrated history of working in the mental health care industry.

I am originally from New York. There, I completed my undergraduate education on Long Island at Hofstra University. Upon graduating, I moved to Florida where I received my M.A. in Counseling at Rollins College and then went on to complete a Ph.D. in Counseling with a specialization in marriage and family therapy from Barry University. I have worked the last 17 years in a variety of clinical facilities and in private practice, accumulating a collection of experiences that have prepared me for the opportunity to provide support to people in a variety of circumstances. I appreciate the opportunity of supporting individuals, couples and families that are going through a range of issues.

My counseling philosophy has always been to help people transform in order to grow as well as to open up people’s minds to the idea that growth itself is a positive, ongoing, and hopefully enjoyable process despite its challenges. While I always hope that people come to counseling with at least an interest in change, it is my wish that they leave with a love for the process of learning about themselves as much as for the substance.

Facilitating change is a staple of counseling, so it was natural for me to use that skill set and training in an academic setting as well. I have been teaching college psychology courses since 2002. I love the balance of providing clinical care to individuals, couples and families, and I also love the chance to shape minds, introduce students to psychological themes and ultimately help them become solid citizens of the world. It is truly an honor to have the chance to teach in multiple facets.

The main goal for me is to better the situation for you and to increase your sense of purpose or contentment in your life. While I hope to assist you in the development of personal insight and growth my primary goal is to alleviate the intensity of the stress of the particular issue(s) involved and make a practical difference in your everyday life.

During this process, I believe it is crucial for you to feel you are being heard and understood; this is the key to establishing a level of trust between client and counselor, a necessary element for success. My role here is to observe, listen, and empathize. I always attempt to understand all those variables spoken of that make up a person’s nature: their family backgrounds, personality traits, communication style, etc. Then I can start to educate—help you understand patterns and sources of dysfunctional behavior, and hopefully help you learn how to change what needs to be changed and deal with what can’t.

These, of course, are goals. They will succeed more with some than others. You may arrive for the express purpose of gaining a minimum amount of guidance needed for some immediate relief, you may have long-term ambitions, or you may be unsure of what you are seeking or how to find it. I want to welcome you into the world of the therapeutic process that will help you navigate your particular journey. Together we can find options that will resonate with you.

I have been fortunate to build a positive rapport with clients over the years. Through it all, my hope is to motivate: bolster confidence where I can, point out weaknesses and hopefully help to correct them, and praise wherever possible for added confidence. Counseling is not just about talking; it’s about motivating people to the idea of continual learning and growing. As a clinician, I accept that that is what I am doing every day.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and grow with you. It truly is an honor and a privilege to be invited into your life.

Pain is part of being alive, and we need to learn that. Pain does not last forever, nor is it necessarily unbearable, and we need to be taught that.’
